Water metering

What you need to know about measuring, recording, and reporting the water you use.

In Tasman, we value our freshwater for drinking, recreation, cultural use, and farming, as well as providing a healthy aquatic habitat within waterways. By measuring and managing water takes, we can look after these resources in a way that protects the environment while sustaining the local economy.

Water permits

Tasman Resource Management Plan sets rules around taking and using water. This includes irrigation and domestic water supply. Some activities are permitted without consent, but if a proposed take is not permitted, a resource consent (also called a water permit) is required. This guide will help you understand how to apply for consent and how to comply.

Weekly Returns Required

If you have a resource consent to take water, you must send water meter readings in on a weekly basis, unless your resource consents states otherwise.

It is important that you:

  • Read your meter each Monday
  • Supply the meter reading to us by 4.00 pm Wednesday each week
  • Tell us of any nil reading
  • Tell us if you are not irrigating each season or when irrigation finished

You can submit your weekly meter returns via our designated meter reading page

Installing a water measuring system

Your water meter must be installed by an approved supplier.  You can find Irrigation New Zealand's list of 'Blue Tick' accredited suppliers on the Irrigation NZ website.
