Tasman District is a boating paradise, but there are some rules to abide by and a need to consider safety.

Tasman District Council's Navigation Safety Bylaw (pdf 3.3 MB) controls all inland waterways and coastal waters up to 12 nautical miles (22.2 kilometres) offshore within Tasman District.

When you ski, sail, motor, jetski, row or paddle any boat in the Tasman District, you are subject to the rules in the bylaw.

The Navigation Safety Bylaw has been updated and takes effect from 1 December 2024. The changes are summarised in this flyer (pdf 141 KB).
