Installing telemetry onto your water meter is an option for providing a weekly meter return. The water use data is automatically transferred from your pumping system to us via a third-party. The third-party will host the data and provide a dashboard available for you to view the data and set up custom alarms.
While there is an initial cost in the equipment and set-up, and an ongoing small fee for data hosting and communications, there are still benefits that may outweigh the costs. These include frequent access to detailed data, time saved by eliminating manual data collection, no need for regular travel to remote field locations and the ability for self-management giving additional savings and data security.
As with all automation, it is not fool proof. Sometimes the telemetry can seem to be working, but the connection between the meter and the telemetry is not working and therefore reporting zeros (a common cause can be a rodent or cow chewing through the wire). Only the user knows when they are using water or not, so Council do require a manual read from you several times a year to validate the telemetry data we have received.
All our Service Providers that provide verification services also install telemetry.
Water meter readings can be directly emailed to a dedicated inbox.
If you have more than one metered well or are responsible for someone else’s readings, it is important that the readings you send to Council are clearly identified e.g. by recording the consent number and the well number.
We encourage everyone to use one of the electronic reporting methods outlined above if they are able (computer, mobile phone). Contact details are listed above for Council staff who can help you get set up to use them.
However, prepaid cards with your Resource Consent information can be sent out for those without reliable internet or device access. If you require more cards please contact us.
