The water main that currently traverses Best Island and Rabbit Island is in poor condition and isn't large enough to cater for growth. The existing pipe is very fragile and often breaks, increasing the likelihood of losing water supply to the Māpua community. To minimise that risk of that, we're operating the water network servicing Māpua at reduced pressure to help protect the pipe.
To fix these issues, we're installing a new water main. The new watermain will improve water supply resilience, cater for growth and allow the water network to operate at higher pressure.
In January 2021, the access bridge to Best Island will be closed to all traffic (with the exception of emergency vehicles) for 2-3 nights, between 7pm and 7am (dates to be confirmed). We are communicating directly with residents about the closure.
We would ask that you keep clear of the work area and pay attention to any construction signage.

This project includes the following elements:
The existing water main running along Aranui Road and Stafford Drive is in very poor condition. There are frequent pipe bursts at many locations. To reduce the risk of pipe breaks, the water is at a lower pressure than desirable.
The Māpua wastewater network is inefficient. There are five pump stations between Ruby Bay and Māpua Wharf, which pump wastewater from one section of pipe to another. Parts of the system are often at capacity during high rain events. Overflows have occurred at Māpua School and tankers are often required to prevent overflows in other locations.
There is no odour control and little or no emergency storage at the existing pump stations to store wastewater during power outages, mains breaks or high rainfall events.
The upgrade to the stormwater channel will improve drainage from properties on Stafford Drive adjacent to Broadsea Avenue. Council have recently secured easements allowing us to do this work.
The project will address these problems and provide more capacity to allow for growth in the area.
There will be no work on Aranui Road between 12 December 2020 and 8 February 2021.
The pipeline installation will be completed in short sections, 50m-100m at a time. The contractor, Donaldson Civil, will reinstate the road as they work along the project route. Work started at Māpua Wharf in June 2019 and will finish at Pine Hill Rd in Ruby Bay. The target completion date is June 2021.
The majority of work outside Māpua School will be completed during the 2019/20 summer school holidays.
Some sections of pipe will be installed along the road berm and some in the road carriageway. Traffic flows will be disrupted and there will be some sections with stop-go or traffic light management in place.
New water meters will also be installed as necessary. When we cut across water supply from the old pipes to the new pipes, there will be short interruptions to supply. We will communicate any disruptions in advance and will schedule these to minimise disruption.
Donaldson Civil has appointed Luke Donaldson as the public liaison manager for this project. Luke is responsible for daily communication with affected parties and can be contacted at any time (including after hours) to discuss any issues that residents or businesses may have - including access to driveways, scheduling of deliveries, rubbish collection, parking, reinstatement and any safety concerns or specific requirements. The Council project manager, Rob O’Grady, is also available to discuss any concerns or issues. Contact details for Luke Donaldson and Rob O'Grady are shown in the Contacts section below.
