Waka Kotahi Transport Agency NZ has set up a fund called Innovating Streets for People to be used for trial projects. The aim of the fund is to support communities to shape their towns and streets in ways that allow more people to move around safely and create interesting spaces for people to enjoy.
Tasman District Council has received funding for your neighbourhood. We are going to work with the community to trial changes to the streets to see if they work for your community and achieve what they were designed to. If that’s the case, we could discuss making permanent changes.

Two co-design workshops were held in October at the Richmond Kindergarten and Richomnd library. 25 passionate people from the neighbourhood came to discuss how to make traffic and pedestrian movements safe. The streets for people team developed a draft design based on the community ideas.
The design will be presented to the community on Wednesday December 2 at 5.30 pm at Richmond Kindergarten (24 Florence Street).
Please join us to be part of a second stage of the co-design process, working alongside Council staff, contractors and other stakeholders.

More than 250 people shared their ideas and concerns about the Croucher/D’Arcy neighborhood area with us through an on-line survey. We were pleased to find out that most people are enjoying their neighborhood. People like being close to shops, library and schools, enjoy the friendly community and living in a quiet area. However, many people are concerned about safety, especially for children, seniors and people with disabilities.
To make the street safer for everyone, the community has suggested lowering the speed limit to 30 km/h, rearranging parking on Elizabeth and Croucher Streets, providing safe crossing options on Talbot Street and improving the park. There were some suggestions that were beyond the scope of this trial project, for example providing better lighting and upgrading the footpath. However, this is good feedback to have for planning future projects.
The next step for the Streets for People project is to identify and approve preferred changes. Based on the community ideas we have developed a range of possible solutions that should help with the most common concerns.
Please join us to be part of a co-design process, working alongside Council staff, contractors and other stakeholders at one of two sessions:
We’d love to see you there and would appreciate your feedback as we move into the next stage of this Streets for People trial project.
There are many opportunities for you to get involved with the project:
|
August – September 2020 |
We will ask you to identify what you like and don’t like about your streets. This has been postponed until we are in level 1.
|
|
October – November 2020 |
We will work together with residents, schools, kindys and other stakeholders to design solutions to improve your experience in the neighbourhood. This may include, for example, calming the traffic, bringing more greenery, redesigning local parks, creating more space for cycling and recreation. |
|
December 2020 –March 2021 |
We will introduce temporary solutions to test how successful they are.
|
|
April-May 2021 |
We will talk with you to see what you think of the temporary solutions.
|
|
June-July 2021 |
We will adjust the temporary solutions based on the gathered data and determine any permanent changes. |
