Most of the submissions were from individuals. 31 of the 145 submissions were from groups:

  • 14 from public institutions or membership associations such as Federated Farmers, Rural Contractors New Zealand, Living Well in Golden Bay, Forest and Bird, the New Zealand Transport Agency and Transpower New Zealand.
  • 17 from private groups or companies such as Hoddy’s Orchard, Vailima Orchard, Fulton Hogan, Nelson Forests and Ravensdown Fertiliser Co-operative.

Generally, submitters affirmed the proposed plan approach of protecting productive land for plant and animal production although there is a wide spectrum of opinion on how this should be achieved.

Challenges for Decision Makers

As always, Council has to balance the interests of the individual landowners to live and use their land as they wish with the effects that this might have on neighbours and the wider community; and with Council’s responsibility to sustainably manage the land resource to meet current needs as well as those of future generations.
