There are no special qualifications required to stand for the local elections.
You don't even need to live in the area you want to stand for, but you must be nominated by two people who do live in that area. For example, you may live in Nelson but want to stand for the position of Richmond Ward Councillor. Your two nominators must reside within the Richmond Ward.
Elected members come from all backgrounds and walks of life: they may be parents, students, business people, or self-employed. An effective elected member will bring a broad range of skills to the role, such as:
