In collaboration with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), Department of Conservation, forestry companies and Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council will reopen access to all reserves from Saturday 22 February.

The rain that fell this week has seen the Build Up Index (BUI)* drop to around 60, which signals it should be safe for everyone to access our reserves once more.

However, as a total fire ban remains in place, access to wood-fired barbecues remains closed for now.

If the rain forecast for the end of the week doesn’t arrive and hot, dry conditions prevail once more, it may be necessary to close access to some reserve areas again. This will be assessed next week and any changes will be advised.

* The BUI is used by Fire and Emergency and other agencies to measure fire risk – it’s “an indicator of the difficulty in supressing a fire that has started”.
