Please be aware that all surface water around the region should always be treated as non-potable (not for drinking). This includes drains, creeks, streams, rivers, ponds and dams.

This is a precaution but given the potential for disease-causing bacteria such as campylobacter or E.coli being present from animals and people, it is not safe to drink from any waterway in our urban or rural environment.

Additionally, in some water ways the risk of toxins from algae is present, which could present a health issue for stock, dogs and people.

Landowners should discuss with their local MPI representative if they’re concerned about stock water quality.

Reminder – surface water takes shouldn’t be used for human consumption unless you have an effective treatment system in use.
